~Wisdom Wednesdays~

Encounters With Blue Jays

This week I’m in Colorado for a lymphatic continuing education class. Staying at my brother-in-law’s place, yesterday morning I’m sitting outside in his wonderful backyard with a creek running through it, drinking coffee and I see something flying within my peripherals fly into the yard. I thought to myself, “Was that a Blue Jay?” I slowly get up from where I’m sitting and look in the direction of where I saw it land, and sure enough it was! I tried to get the camera setting on my phone to work, but by the time I got it working he flew away. I felt like he was watching me and was like, “Not today! You don’t need to capture me in a photo! Just be in this present moment to witness our connection!”

Wasn’t sure what to write for wisdom Wednesday until that moment. So, this morning I decide to sit outside again in the backyard and write my wisdom Wednesday post. As I’m writing that same Blue Jay came back to visit, but this time he sat on a tree branch above me and squawked for my attention. A couple of other birds joined him, like they were calling to his action to give me company.

Obnoxious squawking.

“Hey! Pay attention to me!”

Grand rising Blue Jay!

After my interaction with him yesterday, I started reflecting on my other encounters I’ve had with other Blue Jays in the past. The first time was about 2 years ago, which was the summer before I decided to become a massage therapist. I was working at UPS and Swanson’s part-time, trying to decide what I really wanted to do with my life. Before I went to work at UPS one day, I was doing dishes in my kitchen with the window open.

Out of nowhere I heard an obnoxious loud squawk I had never heard before, and I knew it wasn’t a crow or black bird because I hear them all the time in my backyard. I look out the open kitchen window, and a see on the tree in the neighbor’s yard a beautiful bright blue Blue Jay! I tried to go get my camera to take a picture of him, but by the time I got back he was gone.

A couple years go by, and I don’t see another Blue Jay until this summer. I’ve gone camping with my friends a few times and I’ve been seeing them again. After finishing massage school and starting my own business, this year I have been doubting myself and wondering where this journey is going or what direction should I take it.

I read a blog yesterday about the spiritual meaning of the Blue Jay because I couldn’t remember what it was off the top of my head. I have a spirit animal book back at home, but I didn’t bring it with me on my trip so I couldn’t look it up in there for a reference. Here is an excerpt of the post that I felt resonated with me most with my massage journey:

“Rather than approach directly, the Blue Jay uses it’s symbolism and secret language to alert us to our challenges. It’s position as an observer of human interactions gives it unique insight into our fears and desires. It knows how to create feedback loops that allow it to act as an intermediary between this world and the next, our ordinary dimensions and beyond.

the more time you spend with this humble scavenger, the more you come to realize how much he has seen. As it flies from tree branch to tree branch in search of food, it catches glimpses of the physical world around it with all its beauty and heartbreak. Alerting humans with its ‘call-and-response’ chatter as if trying to tell you something important. The Blue Jay monitors our interactions like a spirit guide from above.”

I’m pretty sure the Blue Jay is my spirit guide for my business adventure and keeps showing up making his presence known.

Reflecting more on the Blue Jay, here are some more messages/meanings that I resonated with from the blog I read. Maybe some of these with resonate with you as well:

  • Concieve life with enthusiasm.
  • Be more bold, couragous, and resourceful to come out on top.
  • Assert yourself without fear.
  • Be confident in yourself and your abilities.
  • Don’t be afraid to approach the unknown because you are capable of handling it.
  • Be a messenger of truth and honesty.
  • Be bold with how you speak and be ready to use it when others thank you for it.
  • Be free spirited and travel wherever you please.
  • Don’t let other’s opinions, especially the ones that put you down, get the best of you because you are unique and different.
  • Stand up for what you believe in.
  • Break free from the ordinary.
  • Take risks and try new things.
  • Don’t follow the rules but don’t challenge them either. Find balance.
  • Do whatever it takes to get what you want.
  • Hard work pays off in the end.
  • Think quickly on your feet, but don’t get lost in you thoughts and lose focus.

This concludes this wisdom Wednesday. Thank you for exploring the wisdom of the Blue Jay and going on this journey with me! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week! Until next time!
